Who We Are
Westgate is a new non denominational, church in Powder Springs Georgia. We are missional and compassionate in our philosophy, reformed and gospel-centered in our theology and passionate and contemporary in our worship. We are a multi-ethnic church of loving, friendly ordinary people who desire to do the extraordinary for the glory, honor and fame of Jesus.
Who We Aren’t
We aren’t legalistic, unfriendly or angry. We don’t handle snakes and we don’t preach the health and wealth “gospel”. We aren’t stiff and uptight but we aren’t a side-show either. With all that being said, we do have our own set of problems and baggage… we aren’t perfect, no church is. So, the best we can do is focus on Jesus and do our best to fulfill the mission He has called us to.
Who is Welcome Here
You are! Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you will be welcomed at Westgate. Whether you are looking for a new church family, have questions about the Christian faith, or are a skeptic or a critic of the church… our doors are open to you. Don’t wait until you get your life straight before you visit us, we want you to come just the way you are.
It’s simple, but it says so much: Love Jesus, love people, and be transparent in doing so.
If We Had a Church Sign
We don’t have a church sign that we can put pithy sayings on, but if we did we promise we would never post cheesy one-liners such as “God answers knee-mail” or “What’s missing in CH__CH? UR”. If we did have a church sign, here are some great quotes we would consider posting. Maybe this will help you understand who we are a little better.
- It’s all about Jesus. It’s a relationship not religion.
- God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.
- Legalism says “I do, therefore I’m loved.” The gospel says “I’m loved, therefore I do.”
- Never forget there is more mercy in Christ than there is sin in you.
- The great difficulty with many Christians is that they cannot persuade themselves that Christ loves them.
Love God, Leave A Legacy, Live On A Mission
Our Values And Things We Do
As we do these things, we also desire to be authentic (“transparent” as we like to say) and a multi-ethnic church.
The Bible is the Word of God.
– 2 Timothy 3:16, 1 Thessalonians 2:13
God’s Word is the only completely reliable and truthful authority. We accept the Bible as our manual for living. Our first question when faced with a decision is, “What does the Bible say?” We practice daily Bible reading and Bible study. The Bible is the basis for all we believe.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
– John 14:6, Acts 4:11-12
Jesus Christ, second Person of the Trinity, lived a sinless life on Earth and voluntarily paid for our sins by dying on the cross as our substitute. This accomplished salvation for all those who receive grace by trusting in Him alone. He rose from the dead and is the only mediator between God and us. He baptizes believers in the Holy Spirit and will return to Earth to consummate history.
You must be born again.
– 2 Corinthians 5:17, Matthew 16:25
Every person is born with a condition that separates us from God. This condition is known as “sin.” As a result, we need God’s saving grace to end our alienation from Him. Salvation comes only through God’s grace, not human effort. He must be received personally by repentance and faith. In the end, everyone will experience bodily resurrection and the judgment. Only believers will enjoy eternal fellowship with God.
Believers can be spirit-filled and spirit-led.
– Acts 1:8, Ephesians 5:18, Luke 11:13
We believe the only way possible to live the Christian life is by God’s power within us. Every believer can be filled with the Holy Spirit by simply asking. We seek to practice a daily dependence on God’s Spirit to enable us to do what is right.
God is sovereign.
– Psalms 103:19, Psalms 115:3, Isaiah 14:24, John 15:16
Scriptures speak of God having a plan and a will. He is in control of events in the past, present, and future. He is not a God who sits idly by, watching powerlessly as things happen beyond His control. We seek to find peace and direction in God’s plan for our lives.
Weekend Service – What should you expect?
Here at Westgate we want our guests to be comfortable and to have a good experience from the moment they walk in the door until they leave. A lot of planning and preparation goes into to making certain our Sunday worship gatherings are a good experience for everyone, especially our guests. When you walk up to the building, our First Impressions Team will greet you at the door. They are there to provide a smiling face and guide you in answering any initial questions you may have.
When you walk in the door, you’ll notice a kiosk for checking in your children and leaving them under the care of our teachers during the worship service. If this is you’re first time, the check in will take a little longer so we can get all the necessary information to take good care of your children. We have four different age-grouped rooms for kids age infant to 6th grade. The oldest kids are grouped together and have their own worship service, teaching and small group time while the younger kids have age appropriate lessons, crafts, games etc.
Relaxed, Friendly, Casual Atmosphere
One thing you’ll notice right away is we have a relaxed, friendly casual atmosphere. There’s no need to dress up unless you want to, but most people dress casually. Our people are very friendly. You’ll see lots of people standing around chatting and sipping on their coffee. Chances are you’ll have more than one person say hello and if you don’t like hugs, we apologize in advance since some of our people are “huggy”.
The music portion of our worship service is led by a live band with a team of vocalists. This group spends a lot of time every week making sure they are ready for the Sunday morning service. You’ll hear a variety of music styles such as pop, gospel, rock and rap, but the style of music is secondary to the purpose of the music.
Every week you’ll hear relevant, biblical, life-application teaching from our Lead Pastor Dwayne Terry or occasionally a guest speaker. We focus on making the scriptures come to life and showing how the lessons they teach are as relevant today as they were when they were originally written.
If you are visiting for the first time, we won’t embarrass you, have you stand up, or ask you for money. We know that many people want to check out the church and remain anonymous for a while – that’s fine with us! BUT…we do offer freebies if you don’t mind letting us know you are a guest and filling out a connection card.
