In the third installment of the “Navigating Marriage” series, Pastor Dwayne looks at Adam and Eve’s relationship in Genesis chapter 3. He uses the passage to deal with several issues including our sin problem and God’s sin solution.
The Bumps In The Road
Navigating Marriage, Part 03
Malachi 2:14 – You ask, “Why?” It is because the Lord is acting as the witness between you & the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.
James 4:17 – Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.
All walls in marriage have their roots in sin. Our Sin Problem
Genesis 3:6b-13 – She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12The man said, “The woman you put here with me–she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Genesis 3:16 – To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
Women are nurturers.
o They struggle with loneliness, and fear of abandonment. o A woman’s wrong approach: controlling.
Genesis 3:17-19 – To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will
eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”
Men desire success.
They struggle with meaninglessness, and fear of failure. A man’s wrong approach: counterbalance.
God’s Sin Solution
Live in God’s sacrifice that covers sin and shame.
Gen 3:20-21 – 20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 Also for Adam & his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, & clothed them.
Respond with love and blessing.
1 Peter 3:8-12 – Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. 11He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. 12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”
Instead of giving love the way you want to give it, give love the way your mate wants to receive it.
Matthew 7:12 – So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you…
- Words of affirmation. (Proverbs 18:21)
- Quality time.
- Receiving gifts (Matthew 7:11)
- Acts of service (Mark 9:35)
