From the “Esther: An Unlikely Hero” series. Sermon 4 of 6

Esther 3:1 ESVAfter these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, and advanced him and set his throne above all the officials who were with him.

Esther 7:10 ESV And the king said, “Hang him on that.” So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the wrath of the king abated.

  • Listen too closely to applause.

Proverbs 27:21 ESV The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise.

Esther 3:2 ESV And all the king’s servants who were at the king’s gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage.

  • Focus on what you don’t have.

Esther 5:13 ESV Yet all this is worth nothing to me, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”

  • Let your emotions rule you.

Esther 3:5-6 ESV And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage to him, Haman was filled with fury. 6 But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone. So, as they had made known to him the people of Mordecai, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus.

Proverbs 29:11 ESV A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.

Psalm 7:14-16 ESVBehold, the wicked man conceives evil and is pregnant with mischief and gives birth to lies. 15 He makes a pit, digging it out, and falls into the hole that he has made. 16 His mischief returns upon his own head, and on his own skull his violence descends.

Mark 11:25 ESV And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

  • Only seek counsel from those who agree with you.

Esther 5:14 ESV Then his wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Let a gallows fifty cubits high be made, and in the morning tell the king to have Mordecai hanged upon it. Then go joyfully with the king to the feast.” This idea pleased Haman, and he had the gallows made.

Proverbs 14:12 ESV There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
