In the third installment of the “ReThink Everything” series, Pastor Dwayne looks at communication in James chapter 3. He uses the passage to deal with several issues including what we must understand to communicate Biblically.

Rethink Language

Rethink Everything, Part 03

It is impossible for a man to learn what he thinks he already knows. – Epictetus

Proverbs 9:9 – 9Instruct a wise man & he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man & he will add to his learning.

Communication Is Tough

James 3:8 – …no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

 There are two realities in communication.
1 Corinthians 2:11a – For who among men knows the thoughts of

a man except the man’s spirit within him?

 It can destroy an entire life.
Proverbs 11:9 – With his mouth the godless destroys his

neighbor…

 No unwholesome talk is supposed to come out of a Christian.

Ephesians 4:29 – Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

What I Must Understand To Communicate Biblically

1. The love of Jesus.
Romans 14:19 – Let us therefore make every effort to do what

leads to peace and to mutual edification.

Edification Oikodomē [oi-ko-do-mā’] – the act of one who promotes another’s growth in Christian wisdom, piety, happiness, holiness

2. It must be done (and heard) out of the love of Jesus.

2 Corinthians 13:10 – This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority–the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.

2 Corinthians 12:19 – Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends, is for your strengthening.

Romans 15:1-2 – We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. 2Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. …

3. The hearer’s ‘filters’.

Luke 6:31 – Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Matthew 7:1 – “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

Romans 15:7 – 7Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

o Of those in church.
o Of those outside the church.

4. Watch the joking.

Matthew 12:34b – …For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

5. Close the loop.
