From the “Pray Without Ceasing” series. Sermon 4 of 4

  • Praise and worship is the context for prayer.
  • Hebrews 4:16 ESVLet us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
    • God commands us to come before His throne with a worshipful attitude.

Psalm 100:2, 4 ESV – … Come into his presence with singing! … 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!

Psalm 150:1-6 ESVPraise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! 2 Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! 3 Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! 4 Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! 5 Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! 6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!

Halal: to shine; hence, to make a show, to boast; and thus to be (clamorously) foolish; to rave; to celebrate

    • God uses worship to change everything.

Psalm 18:3 ESVI call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.

Ezekiel 46:9 ESV“When the people of the land come before the LORD at the appointed feasts, he who enters by the north gate to worship shall go out by the south gate, and he who enters by the south gate shall go out by the north gate: no one shall return by way of the gate by which he entered, but each shall go out straight ahead.

What Do I Praise God For?

    • God’s Character and Nature.

Psalm 145:3 ESVGreat is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

Psalm 48:1 ESVGreat is the LORD and greatly to be praised…

Psalm 96:4 ESVFor great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised…

    • God’s mighty acts.

Luke 19:37-40 ESVAs he was drawing near–already on the way down the Mount of Olives–the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

    In Spirit and in Truth

John 4:23 ESVBut the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

    • Worship must be based on choice not feeling.

Habakkuk 3:17-18 ESVThough the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

Hebrews 13:15 ESVThrough him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

    • Worship must be with everything I have.

2 Samuel 24:24 ESV…”No, but I will buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God that cost me nothing.”

Mark 12:30 ESVAnd you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

    • Worship must be in expectation.

James 4:8 ESVDraw near to God, and he will draw near to you.

Matthew 6:6 NKJV – “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who [is] in the secret [place]; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
