Luke 8:5-8 ESV “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8 And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Luke 8:18 ESV Take care then how you hear

  1. Some people hear but don’t listen.

  1. Pride

James 4:6 ESV But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

  1. Bitterness

Matthew 6:15 ESV – but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

  1. Immorality

James 1:21 ESV Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

  1. Worth

Colossians 1:12 ESV giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

A Practical Guide to Listening

  1. Pray that God would give you the honest and good heart.

Luke 8:15 ESV As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.

  1. Read passages to stir up hunger for God.
  2. Trust in the truth you already have.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESV “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream…

  1. Focus your mind’s attention and heart’s affection on God.
  2. Desire to hear from God more than you desire riches or food.

Psalm 19:10-11 ESV More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. 11 Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

THE PROMISE!

Proverbs 2:3-5 ESV – yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, 4 if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
