Speaker: Pastor Reggie Black
From the “Winning” series. Sermon 8

Joshua 7:1 ESV – But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel.

  • Achan did not fear the Lord

Joshua 7:3-5 ESV – And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are few.” 4 So about three thousand men went up there from the people. And they fled before the men of Ai, 5 and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted and became as water.

  • Soldiers did not follow the Lord

Joshua 7:6 ESV – Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put dust on their heads.

  • Joshua did not seek the Lord first.

Joshua 8:1 ESV – And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear and do not be dismayed. Take all the fighting men with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, his city, and his land.”

  • The Lord restored right after the sin was removed

Numbers 32:23 ESV – But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.

James 1:14-15 ESV – But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Jeremiah 17:5 ESV – Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord.”

Galatians 3:3 ESV – Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
