  • The decisions you make today will create the legacy you leave.

1 Samuel 2:22-24, 29-30 ESV – Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 And he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people. 24 No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading abroad. … 29 Why then do you scorn my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’ 30 Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ but now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

1 Samuel 15:23 ESV For rebellion is as the sin of divination…

1 Kings 1:5-6 ESV – Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. 6 His father had never at any time displeased him by asking, “Why have you done thus and so?”

2 Samuel 16:22 ESV – So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof. And Absalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

2 Samuel 13:30 ESV – While they were on the way, news came to David, “Absalom has struck down all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.”

Discipline Versus Grace

  • Laws that are enforced are a sign of legitimate

Matthew 5:17 ESV – “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Hebrews 12:8 ESV – If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

1 Corinthians 16:13-14 ESV – Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love.

  • Punishment is grace.

Hebrews 12:6-7 ESV – For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

  • Delayed punishment is judgment.

Proverbs 13:24 NKJV He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.

  • Forgiveness is a part of Christian punishment.
  • Balance discipline with encouragement.

Discipline Dos

  • The goal: SELF-discipline.

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

2 Peter 1:5-6, 8 ESV – For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control … 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  • The process: Be mechanical.
  • The method: first time

Matthew 5:37 ESV Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

Proverbs 22:15 ESV Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.

Discipline Don’ts

  • Inconsistency

Matthew 5:37 ESV – Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

  • Bribery

Exodus 23:8 ESV – And you shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the clear-sighted and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.

  • Public
