From the “Inheritance” series. Sermon 1 of 4
Galatians 3:29 – And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
- If we belong to Christ, we are Abraham’s Spiritual offspring
Genesis 12:6-7 – Abram passed through the land… And the Canaanites were then in the land. 7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.”
Exodus 3:17 – and I have said I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt … to a land flowing with milk and honey.”
Joshua 1:4 – …all the land … shall be your territory.
- Joshua as a type of Christ
- Joshua (Yahweh is Salvation, Hebrew equivalent of “Jesus”)
What is our Promised Land?
Ephesians 1:20 – which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places
- Heavenly realm (places)
- Our sphere of spiritual experience identified with Christ (our union with Him)
- Our Promised Land is our victorious inheritance as we choose to follow Jesus in Obedience
Ephesians 2:6 – and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus
Ephesians 3:10 – to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places
Ephesians 6:12 – For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Hebrews 1:1-3 – God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high
John 17:15-16 – I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
2 Corinthians 5:20 – Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.
- We are here to be used of God to fulfill His Redemptive plan giving Him all the Glory
- As we Trust in His power
- A place of conflict leading to a place of spiritual rest
Hebrews 4:1-2 – Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
Matthew 11:28-30 – Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
2 Corinthians 2:14 – Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.
- Rest – not inactivity, but rest in the Finished work of Christ
Our part – Preparing to enter
- Believe God
Joshua 1:3,5 – Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses. 5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.
- Be resolved
Hebrews 11:6 – But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
