From the “A Personal Jesus” series. Sermon 7 of 7
John 15:1, 4-5 – “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener … 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
- menō [minnow] – to remain, to abide, in reference to a place, time or a condition
John 15:6-7, 9-10, 16 – If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. …
- The Holy Spirit causes us to remain.
John 14:16 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever–
paraklētos [pah-rah’-clay-tos] – advocate, comforter, summoned, called to one’s side, especially called to one’s aid
John 14:17, 26 – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. … 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 7:38-39 – Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.
- The Holy Spirit continues to do all the work.
John 3:8 – Jesus answered…“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
- He produces character.
John 14: 5 – If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit
Galatians 5:22-23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
- He produces power.
Acts 1:8 – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…
Colossians 1:6 – All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you…
- He produces pleasure.
