Four Challenges of Being a Sheep
- Sheep get lost.
Isaiah 53:6 – We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way…
- Sheep are defenseless.
- Sheep are stubborn.
- Sheep are filthy.
What The Good Shepherd Does
- He guides.
Psalm 23:1, 3 – The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. … 3 … He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
John 10:3-4 – The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.
- He provides.
Psalm 23:1-3a – The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul.
- He corrects.
Job 5:17-18 – “Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. 18 For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also heal.
Hebrews 12:11 – No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
- He protects.
Psalm 23:4-6 – Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Luke 15:4 – “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?
