Sunday November 10, 2013 – We as Christians need a spiritual father to help us in growing in Christ, to be as Saul was for David and Paul was for Timothy. And as we grow deeper in our relationship with Christ, we can then become a spiritual guide to those that need it.

Guides to Growth in Christ

Growing in Christ, Part 02

Genesis 2:18 – The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone…”

Proverbs 27:17 – As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 – Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: 10 If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

1 Corinthians 11:1 – Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. A Dime A Dozen

 Many Instructors.

1 Corinthians 4:15 – Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.

Paidagogos {pahee-dag-o-gos’} – An instructor, a tutor, i.e. a guardian and guide of boys.

Important Spiritual Guides

 Saul: a tyrant.

1 Samuel 16:23 – Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

1 Samuel 18:10-11 – The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand 11 and he hurled it, saying to himself, “I’ll pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice.

 Barnabas: a friend.

Acts 4:36 – Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”),

 Paul: a father.
1 Corinthians 4:16-17 – Therefore I urge you to imitate me.

1 Corinthians 4:17 – For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, my son whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus…

pater {pat-ayr’} – the originator and transmitter of anything; one who has infused his own spirit into others, who actuates and governs their minds.

2 Timothy 3:10 – You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,

o He does not hear just what you say; he hears your heart.
o He knows where you have been and can help you get where you

need to go.
o He knows your demons and will help you fight them.

 Timothy: a son.

2 Timothy 2:1-2 – You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.
