Myths About Genders

  • Antidotal references about the equality of the sexes make them the same.
  • The differences between men and women are simply cultural or environmental constructs.

1 Peter 3:7 (NLT)In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.

  • Differences make one gender superior over the other.

Galatians 3:28 ESV There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Sin Divides Us

  • The woman wants to nurture which can become control.

Genesis 3:16 ESV – To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.”

  • The man wants to create impact which can become compensation.

Genesis 3:17, 19 ESV And to Adam he said, “…cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; … 19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground…

Grace Heals Us

  • The first act of grace: God limits our strengths through the curse.

Genesis 3:20-21 ESV – The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

  • The second act of grace: God gives grace to cover their shame with a sacrifice.

Genesis 3:22, 24 NIV He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” … 24 …he drove the man out…

  • The third act of grace: God causes us to face our own mortality.

Grace Empowers Us to be Considerate of the Differences

1 Peter 3:7 ESV – Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way…

Gnosis – understanding, considerate, wise, honorable, with an intelligent recognition of the nature of the marriage relation.

1 Peter 3:7b ESV – …showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

  • A woman must encourage her husband and not reinforce his sense of failure.
  • A man must accept leadership within the home and make his wife his best friend.
